Dietmar Voorwold, a German artist based in Scotland, has gained wide recognition for his “land art” – a practice that involves the arrangement of rocks and leaves, sometimes shells, into neat geometric shapes of circles, spirals, flowers and towering structures.

Born in 1957, Mr. Voorwold studied Graphics and Photography in Düsseldorf. In 1998, he completed further education related to Art Therapy at the Institute for Humanistic Psychology (IHP) in Eschweiler, Germany. He has worked with children, adults and the differently-abled in educational and therapeutic institutions in Germany, Holland and Britain. In 2002, he founded the Atelier Spurensuche Project in Wipperfuerth (Germany) and settled down in Scotland in 2008. Since his move to the UK, he has been concentrating on outdoor installations.

Through his creations, the artist aims to express both the simplicity and complexity of nature. His arrangements, wherever they may be set – he believes – enhance the beauty that is already present in their environments. Nature can be approached and interpreted in different ways. Some find it capricious and indifferent and violent, fundamentally a domain of chaos and competition in which instants of peace are always brief and artificial. But here the artist celebrates the ultimate connectedness of everything. Every piece is an emotional journey into primal harmony.
