In the paintings of Julita Malinowska, water is a comforting element in or near which people of all ages, colours and genders rest or play. The various shades of blue shown could be swimming pools, rivers, seas or oceans. Some characters are sleepy and lazy, just floating upon the surface. Other individuals are more alert, probably migrating from one land to another guided by the current of a stream.
When interpreted at a deeper spiritual level, these artworks become reminders of the human need for continual purgation – of both the body and the soul.
Julita was born in Otwock in central Poland in 1979. She studied at the University of Maria Curie-Sklodowska in Lublin and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. She received a Socrates/Erasmus scholarship in 2003 for Wolverhampton University in the UK. In 2008, she was an Artist-in-Residence in Tammisaari, Finland. She defended her Ph.D. thesis in 2012. She now works in Warsaw.
