Active since 2014, Matthias Lueger, a self-taught photographer born and based in Vienna, Austria, is a master when it comes to capturing the darkest depths of the human psyche and the crumbling loneliness of old buildings. His large, mostly monochromatic portfolio, contains chilling, nightmarish – highly atmospheric – depictions of disturbed women and abandoned places. Movies like the The Ring (2002) and The Last Exorcism (2010) immediately come to mind, so also book projects such as Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2013, Ransom Riggs).
Insanity, alienation, delusion, possession – these events are evident. Then there are descents into the netherworld, preparations for obscure ceremonies. Haunted houses. Empty wheelchairs. Rusty keys. Broken pianos.
